Part 1 - History
I got diabetes at the age of 3. I had got this very devastating disease by having chicken pox. Yes, chicken pox. When I got the chicken pox it ruined my pancreas causing my insulin not to function as it would normally. My mom tells me stories of how difficult it was not only for me but for her and our family.
I remember as a little young child having to deal with the emotional issues of having this disease. I would wonder "why me?" or say "Why can't I just die?" I remember in elementary how embarrassing it was telling the teacher my sugar was low because I knew my peers would stare at me, even if it wasn't in a bad way. I remember having to leave early because I had to take the "retarded" bus because the "regular" bus wouldn't know what to do if something happened to me. I remember being annoyed for having to stop at the nurse's office before I went to lunch. I remember having to wake up in the middle of the night because my sugar was low. I remember my mom telling me "Don't eat that you're gonna get your sugar high" I remember the pricking noises when taking my blood sugar and the pain when putting my insulin. I remember. I still remember.
